Buying on AliExpress from the US, Spain and Latin America: taxes and shipping

Updated:

The price on a product page isn't always what you end up paying. Most countries now tax purchases from abroad, and AliExpress usually adds those taxes at checkout. This guide helps you work out the real price before you buy.

Golden rule: check the checkout total

Before paying, review the order summary. That's where AliExpress shows shipping and any taxes collected up front. If the total already includes taxes, you normally won't pay anything else on delivery.

United States

Since 2025, small parcels from abroad no longer enter duty-free. Check the checkout total and, when available, prefer products that ship from US warehouses.

Spain and the EU

Since July 2021, every purchase from outside the European Union pays VAT, with no minimum. For orders up to €150, VAT is usually collected at AliExpress checkout. Products shipped from Spanish or EU warehouses typically arrive within days.

Mexico

  • Orders shipped from abroad: since August 2025, AliExpress shows an estimated tax of about 33.5% in the cart for parcels up to US$117 coming from countries without a trade agreement with Mexico, such as China.
  • Orders shipped from a warehouse in Mexico: pay 16% VAT and arrive faster; AliExpress advertises 5–8 day delivery in major cities.

Chile

Since October 24, 2025, a 19% VAT applies to all purchases from foreign platforms, with no minimum (purchases under US$41 used to be exempt). Purchases up to US$500 pay no customs duty.

Other countries

Rules change often. Before a big purchase, check the AliExpress checkout total and your country's official customs website.

If something goes wrong

  • Message the seller from your AliExpress order.
  • If that doesn't fix it, open a dispute from the same order within the Buyer Protection window.
  • Film yourself opening expensive parcels — it helps a lot if you need to file a claim.
